The Scots Guards Regiment was formed on 28 March 1642. ...

The Scots Guards regiment was formed on 28 March 1642 when King Charles I authorised Archibald Campbell, the first Marquess of Argyll, to raise a regiment of 1,500 men for service in Ireland - originally known as the Marquess of Argyll's Royal Regiment.

After the death of Charles I, when King Charles II was crowned king of Scotland in 1650, the regiment became his Lyfe Guard of Foot and fought in the Civil War. The Lyfe Guard was disbanded after Cromwell's victory at the Battle of Worcester when Charles II fled to France, but reformed in 1661 when Charles II returned.
