Usually seen in Mary Queen of Scots' Outer Chamber at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, it is said to have been commissioned by Lady Margaret Douglas, Countess of Lennox for her husband Matthew Stewart, Earl of Lennox and Regent of Scotland.
