A historic Wick distillery has produced the world's best whisky, whisky expert Jim Murray has announced.

A whisky produced at a remote distillery in Wick has been named as the world’s best whisky in Jim Murray’s 2012 Whisky Bible. Whisky expert Jim Murray chose the single malt Old Pulteney after tasting more than 1,200 new drams and said: ‘The 21-year-old Old Pulteney absolutely exploded from the glass with vitality, charisma and class.

‘Pulteney doesn't have the financial muscle of the major whisky barons to market its malts on the global stage. I hope that this award helps one of Scotland's great unsung distilleries to become discovered around the world.’
The small distillery where Old Pulteney is produced has a long history in Wick, where it was once closed down after temperance laws saw alcohol banned for 25 years from 1922.
