Football fans were in for a surprise when, shortly after leading Liverpool to victory in the FA Cup Final, Bill Shankly announced his retirement. Here's a collection of some of Shankly's most memorable quotes about the beautiful game, and his love of his native Scotland:


Also this year, a TV classic was born as the series Bagpuss first aired, introducing the children of Britain to the old saggy cloth cat and his collection of toy shops friends including Professor Yaffle and the helpful mice. In this clip, the toys hear the story of the Frog Princess, before putting their problem solving skills to good use:


The 1974 Eurovision Song Contest was a glitter fest of Seventies style, with flares, long hair and even longer skirts. Abba for Sweden triumphed this year, with an unforgettable rendition of their hit Waterloo:
