Mary Queen of Scots lectures from History Scotland
Explore the life, relationships and intrigue of Mary Queen of Scots, with two very special History Scotland Zoom lectures.

Princess, queen, wife, mother, prisoner, martyr… for centuries, the life of Mary Queen of Scots has continued to fascinate generation after generation of history lovers.

Dr Estelle Paranque and David Templeman have devoted years of study to Mary’s life, and now they share their research with a worldwide audience. Each talk lasts around 45 minutes and will be followed by a 30-minute audience Q&A.

To enable as many people as possible to join in, we are recording each talk and Q&A, and will release the recording to ticket holders to enjoy for 7 days after broadcast.

14 JUNE: MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS OR CATHERINE DE MEDICI – WHO WAS ELIZABETH I OF ENGLAND’S BIGGEST RIVAL?

Dr Estelle Paranque explores the deadly rivalry between Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots is well known, but this turbulent period of history also produced a third powerful queen: Catherine de Medici - a formidable woman whose children went on to shape the dynasties of Europe.

In this talk, Dr Estelle Paranque will discuss the rivalry between the three queens and explain why Catherine’s true role as a potential rival to Elizabeth I has been overlooked.

5 JULY: MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS – THE CAPTIVE QUEEN IN ENGLAND

Discover the fascinating story of Mary Queen of Scots' years in captivity in English prisons following her flight from Scotland.This talk by historian David Templeman will follow Mary on her journey as a captive queen around various prisons. 

Rather than the benign period portrayed by some of Mary's biographers, the talk will convey intrigue, passion, plots and escape attempts.
