The Museums’ Turkey Red Collection (from textile manufacturers in the Vale of Leven, Dunbartonshire) contains 200 pattern books and around 40,000 samples. These were photographed for the Colouring the Nation project which challenges the perception that Scotland’s industrial past was dominated by heavy industry.
The book has chapters on the manufacturers and designers, the processes involved and the vibrant patterns.
Professor Stana Nenadic directed the Colouring the Nation project and Dr Sally Tuckett was the postdoctoral researcher on the project.
The project was a collaboration between National Museums Scotland and the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh. Published for National Museums Scotland by NMS Enterprises Limited – Publishing.
