This book presents recent academic research and ideas about the Lewis Chessmen, a hoard of medieval ivory gaming pieces found on the Isle of Lewis. Recognised both as outstanding examples of 12th-century art and as icons of the Scandinavian world, eleven of the Chessmen are now in the National Museums Scotland collection.
Editors David H. Caldwell was formerly Keeper of the Scotland and Europe and Archaeology at National Museums Scotland and Mark A. Hall is History Officer for Perth Museum and Art Gallery.
