University of Strathclyde’s Centre for Lifelong Learning
The Centre of Lifelong Learning broadens online offering during 2020 /21
The Centre for Lifelong Learning at The University of Strathclyde has been working hard to create new ways to continue to engage with our valued students since the start of the Covid-19 crisis. We have successfully launched two live and online short course programmes in April and during the summer, and are excited to announce that our Online Daytime and Evening Programme is now open for registration for classes commencing this October 2020.

Our classes are delivered using the online learning platform ‘Zoom’ and we provide ‘Zoom’ guidance and support to help you get up and running with your chosen class. The Online Daytime and Evening Programme offer short courses in History and Genealogy including;
- Kings in the North: The Emergence of Scotland 500-1000 AD
- ‘The Sun Never Set’: A History of the British Empire
- Egypt of the Pharaohs
- Family History Research: An Introduction
- Genetic Genealogy: An Introduction
- Using Technology in your Family History Research
Our History tutors bring a wealth of knowledge and academic experience to our live, online history classes. Students learn through illustrated lectures, online resources and class discussion and feedback from our current cohort of students has been very positive.

These classes are perfect for beginner to intermediate level students, but if you are interested in something a little more challenging, The University also offers online graduate degrees in Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies, with various entry points and a part-time and full-time option for the MSc. The master’s degree is designed to provide a breadth and a depth of understanding of British research and resources through lectures and practical course work.
Graduate degree students are offered one to one support from a tutor who provides feedback on course work and there are real time online chat sessions and active forums which allow students to communicate with tutors and one another. Most of our tutors are also self-employed genealogy professionals working with clients day to day and this perspective brings a real strength to the course. In addition to the development and delivery of our extensive range of online learning, the Genealogy Department Team are involved in a variety of research projects focusing on documentary and genetic evidence. Current research projects include the Declaration of Arbroath Family History Project in association with the Foundation of Medieval Genealogy, and the Battle of Bannockburn Family History Project.
