Eminent historian Professor Tom Devine is to receive a knighthood for services to Scottish history.
Professor Devine is among 1,149 people to be named in the Queen's Birthday List 2014 and one of just two men to receive a knighthood (the other recipient is Scottish Financial Enterprise chairman Ewan Brown).
Professor Devine is a distinguished historian who currently holds the post of Personal Senior Research Chair of History; Scottish History, at the University of Edinburgh. His academic career has spanned almost fifty years, beginning with a First Class degree in economic and social history from the University of Strathclyde in 1968. In 1998 he became the director of the world's first centre of advanced research in Irish and Scottish Studies - at the University of Aberdeen.
He has written more than thirty history books including his bestselling text The Scottish Nation, published in 1999. Professor Devine is the only living scholar in the humanities and social sciences in the UK to have been elected to the three learned academies in the British Isles: Royal Society of Edinburgh, Royal Irish Academy and the British Academy
Speaking on Edinburgh University's website, Professor Devine said: 'This recognition wouldn't have been possible without the collective support over the many years of my career of colleagues, students, both graduate and undergraduate, and, above all, of Catherine, our children and grandchildren.
'I thank them all most warmly.'
