Historic Scotland has launched a national search for a young 'heritage hero' to be recognised at this year's Young Scot Awards.

Historic Scotland has invited members of the public to nominate their 'heritage hero' for an award in the heritage category of the 2012 Young Scot Awards. The award will recognise a young person who gives their time 'selflessly to protect, maintain and support the nation's historic environment'.

Historic Scotland Chief Executive Ruth Parsons said: 'We are delighted to be sponsoring the 'Heritage Hero' award again this year. Our heritage, which is known and celebrated throughout the world, helps define who we are, and forms a key part of our culture.

'It is extremely encouraging to see so many young people with a passion for Scottish history. Their enthusiasm for the stories that reveal so much about the nation's character and identity, and their desire to share this knowledge with others, is an inspiration we can all draw hope
from.'

Nominations for an individual aged between eleven and 26 can be made by 26 February 2012 and the Young Scot Awards website.

Last year's winner was Jamie O'Rourke (pictured with Ruth Parsons, left, and singer Michelle McManus) who developed, managed and conducted history tours in Falkirk town centre.
