Angela McCarthy is Professor of Scottish and Irish History at the University of Otago, New Zealand, where she teaches Scottish, Irish, and migration history.

Professor McCarthy has written widely on the Scottish diaspora, including:
- Personal Narratives of Irish and Scottish Migration, 1921-65 (2007)
- Scottishness and Irishness in New Zealand since 1840 (2011)
- Global Migrations: The Scottish Diaspora since 1600 (edited with John M. MacKenzie, 2016)
- The Scottish Experience in Asia, c. 1700 to the Present (edited with T.M. Devine, 2017).
Her forthcoming book (with T.M. Devine) explores the life of James Taylor, ‘father of the Ceylon tea enterprise’. Titled Tea and Empire: James Taylor in Victorian Ceylon, it will be published in September 2017 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Ceylon tea. Angela joined History Scotland’s editorial board in 2011 and appreciates the magazine’s coverage of the history of Scotland not only at home, but abroad.
