On 24 May 1153, David I of Scotland died at Carlisle, less than a year after the death of his only son and heir Henry, Earl of Northumberland.
Following his son's death, David I had made arrangements for his grandson Malcolm (or Mael Coluim) to inherit the throne, with Regent Donnchad I taking the eleven-year-old boy on a tour of Scotland to meet his future subjects.
Malcolm's coronation took place before David I had been buried, in order to cement his claim to the throne.
