Reverend Thomas Burns founded a Free Church Settlement in New Zealand on 23 March 1848, which later became known as Dunedin.

Architect Charles Settle was asked to aim to replicate the characteristics of the streets of Edinburgh, with a mixture of grand and quirky designs. Within four years, Dunedin was the capital of the Otago Province, with the discovery of gold in 1861 prompting a rise in population.
