Gavin Maxwell, author of Ring of Bright Water, was born on 15 July 1914.
As a boy, Maxwell lived in the village of Elrig, Wigtownshire and was greatly inspired by his grandfather, who had a great interest in natural history.
After service in World War Two in the Special Operations Executive, Maxwell moved to the Highland community of Sandaig, which would be the setting of his million-selling book Ring of Bright Water.
The book told the story of him bringing an otter home from Iraq and settling it into Scottish waters. The book was made into a film of the same name in 1969.
