The Festival of Archaeology, the UK’s biggest annual celebration of archaeology, returns this summer from 15-30 July - this year's theme is Archaeology and Creativity
Hundreds of events will be delivered all over the UK by community groups, heritage organisations, universities and commercial units throughout the festival fortnight. Festival organisers The Council for British Archaeology will be delivering several key events across the fortnight, both online and in person.
The Festival encourages audiences to discover the archaeology and heritage around them, and explore, learn and unearth stories or archaeology across different sites, buildings, places and people that make their local communities special.

Neil Redfern, Executive Director of the CBA, said “We are so excited for the return of the Festival of Archaeology for 2023, with more events and activities than ever before. Our theme of “Archaeology and Creativity” invites people to explore the creative processes through which we create memory and meaning. We hope that this will be our biggest and best festival yet, and would love as many people as possible to take part in the exciting and innovative events being held across the UK. We encourage everyone to discover the events nearest to them, as well as virtual activities and downloadable resources via the Festival website”.
To discover more about events in their area, residents can visit the Festival page where they can search using our handy map feature or regional filter. If your group or organisation is interested in hosting an event, e-mail. Participants are encouraged to share photos, and join in with the festivities on social media using the hashtag #FestivalofArchaeology.
