This was the year of the 'space race' with the Soviet Union pitted against the USA in the bid to land a man on the moon. John F Kennedy's address to Congress in May 1961 spoke of the hopes of the United States to lead the space adventure:



Scottish film making received a welcome boost this year as the documentary 'Seawards the Great Ships' filmed at Clyde shipyards became the first Scottish film to win an Oscar. Here, the Clyde's domination of the shipbuilding industry is celebrated:



This was the year the world said goodbye to George Formby, who died on 6 March at the age of 56:
